Cannabis club etiquette, you can put it that way, is basically the same as the common rules of any other bar. So, you should behave in a cannabis club exactly as you would anywhere else: just normally.
However, in addition to basic rules, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Cannabis club etiquette: a few things to keep in mind when you visit a cannabis club in Barcelona
- Do not wait in groups on the street outside the club, especially if the street is already crowded. Try not to mix with others while waiting.
- Don’t disturb people in the neighbourhood by being noisy. It is important that clubs live in harmony with their neighbours and ensure that everyone has the right to peace and quiet.
- Never buy weed from a street dealer, and especially never do such stupid thing in front of a cannabis club, because you may unintentionally incriminate the club. Clubs are more likely to be under the control of the authorities, which means you are more likely to get in trouble if you buy weed illegally.
- In the club, avoid all terms and behaviour that imply the act of purchasing. You don’t ‘buy’ weed, you ‘get’ weed, for which you don’t ‘pay’ but ‘donate’. Seems like a small thing, but important to remember!
- If you’re going with a group, make it a maximum of five because more people can cause ‘uncertainty’. I mean, over five people, the likelihood of one of you doing something stupid increases.
Misconceptions about cannabis clubs
In countries where cannabis is illegal, there are often rumours about the dangers of cannabis clubs. Dangers exist, but not in those clubs. In a cannabis club, conflicts such as verbal abuse or assault are much less frequent than in a normal nightclub. Obviously, in normal nightclubs the number of guests is much higher, so the number of conflicts is also higher.
There are at least three reasons why cannabis clubs are not dangerous at all.
First of all, these clubs are primarily places for relaxation and easy, casual socialising, so the motivation of a cannabis club visitors is much different from visitors of nightclubs.
The second is that cannabis, unlike alcohol, has a calming effect, so aggressive behaviour responsible for conflicts is unusual after smoking. The use of marijuana does not cause any urge to become violent, on the contrary, it calms down the users. Many people who go to a cannabis club just want to chill and spend a relaxing time with friends avoiding those ‘pricks’ inevitably appear in nightclubs.
And thirdly, clubs are exercising their right to select who they let into the premises, so they can reject the risky ones!
